  Ich finde die Alben "Vol. 4" und "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" richtig genial. Innovative Rockmusik, die weit von Heavy Metal entfernt ist. Es wundert mich sowieso, warum Black Sabbath immer als Vorreiter des Heavy-Metal genannt werden... Ich kenne nur ein astreines Heavy-Metal-Lied von Black Sabbath: "Symptom Of The Universe" von der "Sabotage". Auch eine ganz feine Scheibe.

kennst du die neu aufgelegte Version von "Live at Last" mit Bonus-CD? Heiüt "Past Lives"...die finde ich super. Auf der 2. CD sind u.a. "Hand of Doom", "Hole in the Sky", "Symptom..."...ist halt ne Zusammenstellung aus verschiedenen Jahren, nicht nur ein Gig. In dem Zusammenghang ist auch das Video "The Black Sabbath Story Vol. I" ne Empfehlung, sind ein paar schöne Live-Clips mit drauf.

Hmmm, irgendwie bin ich nun im Zwist, ob nun Led Zeppelin oder Black Sabbath die beste Band aller Zeiten ist.

Auf jedenfall bin ich seit 10 Jahren treu ergebener Fan der Band, besitze jedes Album und folglich sind BS schon fast ein Teil von mir. Mein momentanes Lieblingsalbum ist "Vol. 4", nicht zuletzt dank dem genialen "Wheels Of Confusion".

Ausserdem klang eine Metal-Band nie authentischer und vorallem böser als Black Sabbath auf ihrer ersten Scheibe. (Ich erwähne hier vorallem den gleichnamigen Opener mal besonders)

Habe diesen sehr interessanten thread durchgelesen und musste relativ verblüfft feststellen, dass ich nie den Namen BLACK SABBATH gelesen habe (sofern ich nix übersehen hab)!!! Find ich voll krass, bin zwar zugegebenermaüen Fan, aber stehe ich hier echt alleine da wenn jedes Anfangslied der ersten 6 Alben für einen absoluten Meilenstein der Rockmusik halte?

?This is the year when hope fails you, when the test subjects run the experiment and the bastard you know is the hero you hate?, barks Slipknot's sergeant major singer Corey Taylor as if addressing an imaginary army of fans on the anthemic 'Pulse Of The Maggots'. As air raid sirens wail and jackboots fall into step before him, the company credo continues: ?Cohesion is possible if we try- There's no reason, no lesson, no time like the present. Tell me right now: what have you got to lose? Except your soul.? Then comes the battle cry: ?WHO'S WITH US??

If your taste of the heavy doesn't extend much beyond Linkin park then the chances are it won't be you. Despite first crawling out from their godforsaken hole at the peak of nu-metal's popularity, Slipknot are, in essence, as old school as a faded Slayer shirt- and, in the current climate, just as unfashionable.

Look beneath the Hammer House Of Horror haberdashery and you'll find nine misfit malcontents who grew up overdosing on death metal and gore-soaked slasher flicks. They may count a resident DJ amongst their number but the only 'rap' Slipknot have been associated with is the criminal charge of bassist Paul Gray for possession of drug paraphernalia last year.

And yet Slipknot have managed to make an impression on the mainstream. Their self-titled debut sold two million copies worldwide, while their caustic second, 'Iowa', entered the UK charts at Number One- almost certainly the most extreme record to do so. By distilling Marilyn Manson's anti-authoritarian aesthetic and then adding fast drum fills and razor-edged riffs nicked from Megadeth records, Slipknot appealed not only to the disaffected, but also the disenfranchised metal kids put out by the sudden popularity of 'their' music.

As such, the decision to start experimenting with their sound on 'Vol 3' is a bold one. At least two thirds of it's still comprised of head spinning speed metal, but there are signs of genuine progression-not to mention progressive rock- from the off. Opener 'Prelude 3.0' is three minutes of ambient and half whispered vocals, whereas the album's centerpiece, a historic two-part gothic love story entitled 'Vermillion' features an unexpectedly poignant unplugged reprise that's part Black Sabbath's 'Planet Caravan', part Pink Floyd's 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn'. Rick Ruben produced this record in the same reputedly haunted house that he recorded the Mars Volta's debut, which suggests that it might well be the ghost of Sid Barrett's fragile sanity rattling the radiators at night. More surprising still, given that this band were criticized for including a catchy chorus on their last album, is the introduction of acoustic guitars, piano parts and-whisper it- string sections. 'The Nameless' intercuts thrash riffs with softly-strummed interludes while the off-kilter coda 'Danger, Keep Away' goes as far as to steal it's unsettlingly simple synth motif from 'Everything In It's Right Place', which perhaps explains Corey Taylor's recent claim that 'Vol3' occupies the middle ground between 'Reign In Blood' and Radiohead.

And, as if to counterbalance the more off-message moments, elsewhere Slipknot sound more ferocious, more frenetic and more generally fucked off with the world than they have done before and the Ministry-meets-Manson mash-up of 'Pulse Of The Maggots' is an exemplary exercise in modern metal and as exhilarating a song as you'll hear all year.

There's so much going on throughout 'Vol 3', so many ideas, so much to hear, that it takes more than one listen to fully take it in. On the first listen it feels fractured and unfocused on the second it sounds like the metal album of the year.

One thing that is certain is that Slipknot have made an ambitious attempt to move things forward. So, who's coming with them? After all, what have you got to lose?

COVER IT UP VOL.1

Nuclear Blast hat sich der Sache durchaus kompetent angenommen und die Tracks auf der Doppel CD nicht unter irgendein Motto gestellt, sondern schlicht und ergreifen 35 gelungene Coverversionen ausgesucht. Zwar sind ein guter Teil der Songs auf den offiziellen Alben der jeweiligen Bands erschienen, aber erstens hat eh keiner alle Scheiben der hier gelisteten Bands im Regal stehen und zweitens sind noch eine ganze Anzahl Songs dabei, die nur auf Special Editions oder Singles zu hören waren. Natürlich gibt es hier neben viel Licht auch einige Schatten, aber die sind definitiv in der Minderheit. "Cover It Up Vol.I" ist also ne wirklich gelungene Sammlung geworden und darf, wenn sie das Niveau beibehalten, durchaus in Serie gehen.

Und hier lässt sich kaum Negatives an der Zusammenstellung dieser Compilation finden. Zwei CDs und 35 Songs lang wird von Metal-Bands quer durch die eigene Konkurrenz oder über den Hartwursttellerrand hinaus gewildert (u.a. SINERGY mit ABBAs "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight), MACHINE HEAD mit "Message In A Bottle" von THE POLICE, NEVERMORE mit "The Sound Of Silence" von SIMON + GARFUNKEL, MNEMIC mit DURAN DURANs "Wild Boys" oder die IN FLAMES-Fassung des GENESIS-Hits "Land Of Confusion"). Manchmal wird das Original ohne groüen Abwandlungen adaptiert wie im Falle GRAVE DIGGER und "Running Free" (IRON MAIDEN), manchmal ergeben sich aber auch völlig neue Sichtweisen auf einen altbekannten Track und man lernt die Bands von einer ganz anderen Seite kennen (z.B. DIMMU BORGIR bei ACCEPTs "Metal Heart" oder PANTERA während TED NUGENTs "Cat Scratch Fever"). Kurzweil ist jederzeit garantiert, wobei man natürlich über vereinzelte Ausfälle hinwegsehen muss (DONOTS mit dem TWISTED SISTER-Klassiker "We're Not Gonna Take It").
Wer die Spontaneität und das Partyfeeling von Coverversionen mag, ist mit "Cover It Up Vol. 1" also richtig gut bedient. Zumal sich mit diesen beiden CDs wunderbare Rateabende organisieren lassen, während denen man endlich mal seinen regelmäüig mit Allwissenheit rumprolenden Kumpels in punkto Musikkenntnisse auf den Zahn fühlen kann. Jede falsche Antwort kostet eine Runde. Das wird ein Rausch! So muss es sein! Und der Titelzusatz "...Vol. 1" suggeriert direkt einen zweiten Saufabend.

Okay, man mag nun darüber streiten, ob sich Ozzy Osbourne, Toni Iommi, Geezer Butler und Bill Ward tatsächlich im Jahre 1967 zusammengetan haben, denn die Angaben in verschiedenen Quellen reichen von 1966 bis 1969.
Laut der offiziellen DVD "The Black Sabbath Story: Volume One" ist es das Jahr 1967 gewesen, in welchem sich die o.g. Personen unter dem Namen Pulka Tulk formierten, sich alsbald in Earth umbenannten, zunächst erstmal relativ harmlosen Blues-Rock spielten und sich nur kurze Zeit später nach einem alten Horrofilm benannten, der im Kino gegenüber ihres Proberaumes lief: BLACK SABBATH!

Unter diesem Namen gelangten die vier Engländer in den 70ern nicht nur zu Weltruhm, sondern lieferten vor allem mit ihren ersten fünf Alben die Blaupause für das, was uns allen heute unter dem Begriff HEAVY METAL bekannt ist.

"Black Sabbath", "Paranoid", "Master of reality", "Vol. 4" und "Sabbath bloody Sabbath" sollten eigentlich zur "Pflichtlektüre" eines jeden gehören, der sich mit härterer Musik beschäftigt, denn Iommi und Co. haben auf diesen Alben nicht nur unsterbliche Riffs (z.B "Iron man" oder "Sabbra Cadabra") produziert sondern auch lyrisch all jene Themen bearbeitet, die auch heute noch zur Textproduktion herhalten müssen - sei es nun Satanismus ("Black Sabbath"), Emo-Geheule ("Paranoid") oder Fantasy-Zeug ("The wizard").
Und obwohl die Songs von BS nicht gerade anspruchsvoll arrangiert, oder technische Hächstleistubgen gewesen sind, so wusste die Band doch verscheidenste Geschmäcker befriedigen zu können - vom unheilvollen Stampfer, über straighte Rocknummern bis hin zu Balladen (keine Ahnung, was die bei "Planet Caravan" eingeworfen haben, aber es muss gewirkt haben :mrgreen: ) ist alles vorhanden.
Und "Paranoid" zählt auch heute noch zum Liveset von Ozzy, Black Label Society, Black Sabbath und jeder noch so schlechten Coverband :roll:

Das hier soll erstmal nur ein kleiner und kurzer Einstieg sein, denn es würde wohl etliche Zeit kosten die ganzen 40 Jahre revue passieren zu lassen - zudem hab' ich die meiner Ansicht nach wichtigsten Alben eh schon erwähnt :mrgreen: (wobei "Heaven and hell" und "Mob rules" mit Ronnie James Dio am Mikro auch in jede Sammlung gehören sollten :wink: ).
Leider haben BS ihren Zenit schon vor einiger Zeit überschritten und den passenden Zeitpunkt zum Abtreten verpasst - stattdessen schlagen sie sich wahlweise mit Dio oder Ozzy alle zwei Jahre mir Reunion-Touren durch die Gegend... naja...

Dennoch mache ich jetzt erstmal ein Bier auf - darauf, dass unsere Musik vor 40 Jahren ihren Anfang genommen hat :mrgit:
